Economic Development and Diversification

Client Situation

The government of Brunei Darussalam wanted to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to develop its non-oil and gas clusters in order to diversify the economy and maintain a high level of prosperity for the country.

What We Did

Monitor worked with the Economic Development Board of the Brunei Darussalam government to develop a robust strategy and action plan. Utilizing economic data, numerous in-depth interviews, and an electronic survey tool, Monitor examined three main areas:

  • Brunei Darussalam's economic performance
  • Its business and innovation environment
  • The competitiveness of prioritized clusters with high FDI attractiveness in Brunei Darussalam

Based on this analysis, we developed business plans for attracting FDI in the prioritized clusters, and worked with the client to create implementation plans needed as part of Brunei Darussalam's FDI agenda.

Results

As a result of our work, key leaders in government, business and academia are actively involved in carrying through recommendations outlined in our final deliverable, the Brunei FDI Initiative Report. This report serves as a rallying point for various stakeholders involved in the Initiative, and provides a clear roadmap for Brunei's decision makers to follow as they seek to attract and retain FDI in the prioritized clusters. Perhaps most importantly, the effort has resulted in the engagement of the country's most senior leaders, including His Majesty the Sultan and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed.
